Gaza na História Judaica

Postagem Gaza in Jewish History de Michael Pitkowsky no Blog Menachem Mendel: While most Jews only associate Jewish history and Gaza with the last few decades, there is actually a very long relationship between the Jewish people and Gaza. See here for a general overview of Jewish settlement in Gaza. There are even some sources which describe Jews fighting alongside Byzantines troops in their battle against the Arab conquest. [N. Stillman, The Jews of Arab Lands, 24] Two important figures in Jewish history associated with Gaza are Israel ben Moses Najara and Nathan of Gaza, Shabbetei Tzvi’s confidant and supporter. Najara, known for his poetry, was also the Chief Rabbi of Gaza for a time during the 16th century. Many of his liturgical poems are found in his book Zemirot Yisrael. Maybe his most famous composition is the zemer Yah Ribbon. You can listen to a number of different versions of it here and also listen here for something a bit different.
